Delivery orders
How to split a DoorDash order, fees and all
DoorDash cannot charge one order to several cards — there is no split payment on a normal order, so one person always pays the whole thing. The fix is to split the receipt afterwards: save the itemized receipt as a PDF, upload it, and let everyone claim what they ordered from one link. The delivery fee, service fee, tax and tip are then shared in proportion to each person's food rather than divided per head.
The fees are the whole argument
A restaurant check has one pooled amount to worry about, the tip. A delivery order has four: a delivery fee, a service fee, tax, and the tip. On a modest order those can add up to a third of what gets charged, and how you divide them decides who is subsidising whom.
Here is a real-shaped order. Three people, one delivery, $10.79 of fees and tax on top of the food, plus a $9 tip.
| Burrito bowl — Ana | $14.00 |
| Two tacos — Ben | $8.00 |
| Family platter — Chi | $38.00 |
| Chips and salsa — shared | $6.00 |
| Subtotal | $66.00 |
| Delivery fee | $3.99 |
| Service fee | $1.50 |
| Tax | $5.30 |
| Tip | $9.00 |
| Total charged | $85.79 |
The chips divide three ways at $2 each, which puts Ana at $16, Ben at $10 and Chi at $40 of the $66 subtotal — 24.24%, 15.15% and 60.61%. Apply those proportions to the $19.79 of fees, tax and tip and compare it with splitting the extras evenly at $6.60 a head:
| Person | Food | Fees, tax & tip | Owes | Split evenly instead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ana | $16.00 | $4.80 | $20.80 | $22.60 |
| Ben | $10.00 | $3.00 | $13.00 | $16.60 |
| Chi | $40.00 | $11.99 | $51.99 | $46.60 |
$20.80 + $13.00 + $51.99 = $85.79, the exact amount DoorDash charged. Ben ordered two tacos and would have paid $3.60 more under the even split — 28% on top of a $13 dinner, for fees on somebody else's family platter. That is the difference people feel and do not say anything about.
Doing it in about a minute
- 1
Open the completed order in DoorDash
In the DoorDash app, go to Orders, pick the order, and open the receipt. On the web, dashboard orders have a full itemized receipt view you can print to PDF. Everything you need — the items, each fee, the tax and the tip — is on that one screen.
- 2
Save it as a PDF, or screenshot it
Use the share or print option to save the receipt as a PDF. A screenshot works too; if the receipt is longer than one screen, take several and upload them all. A DoorDash receipt is generated text rather than a photo of paper, so it reads almost perfectly.
- 3
Upload it to EachSplit
Start a new bill and upload the PDF or the screenshots. Every item comes out as its own line, along with the delivery fee, the service fee, the tax and the tip.
- 4
Send the link to the group chat
Share the claim link. Everyone opens it in their browser, types their first name, and taps the items they ordered. Nobody installs DoorDash, and nobody needs an account.
- 5
Let the fees fall where they belong
Fees, tax and tip are shared in proportion to what each person ordered, not divided per head — so the person who ordered a side does not pay the same delivery fee share as the person who ordered for three. Copy the one-line-per-person summary into the chat and everyone pays the host back directly.
