A free Splitwise alternative that splits the actual receipt
Most people looking for a Splitwise alternative are looking for one of two things: they have hit the daily cap on the free plan, or they want the receipt itemized without paying for Pro. EachSplit does both, and it does not ask the rest of your table to sign up for anything.
What changed on Splitwise's free plan
Splitwise now limits how many expenses a free account can add in a day. It does not publish the exact number and reports vary, but it is small — widely described as about three — and once you hit it you cannot log anything else until the next day. Free accounts also see ads between screens, and receipt scanning is reserved for Pro, which is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year at the time of writing.
None of that is unreasonable — servers cost money, and Splitwise ran free for a long time. It is simply a bad fit for the specific evening where six people are adding expenses on a trip, or the Sunday where you want to itemize one big grocery run.
What EachSplit does differently
It reads the receipt, free
Photo, iPhone HEIC, or PDF. Every line, the tax and the tip come out itemized — and the app checks its own total against the printed one so you know whether it read the paper correctly.
Everyone claims their own items
Drop the link in the group chat. Each person types their first name and taps what they had, all at the same time, watching the totals move. No installs, no accounts.
Tax the way the receipt charged it
When a receipt taxes the beer and zero-rates the groceries, EachSplit can apply each line's real rate instead of spreading one average across everything.
It shows its working
Every person's total breaks down into the lines they claimed, their share of tax, and their share of tip. Nobody has to take the number on faith.

When Splitwise is still the better tool
It would be easy to leave this section out, so here it is. Splitwise is the better choice if you are running a long, continuous ledger between the same people — flatmates squaring up over years rather than a dinner or a trip. Its balance history is deeper than ours, it has native iOS and Android apps where we are a website, and it converts currencies automatically, which we do not.
EachSplit is built around the receipt in front of you: this bill, these people, right now, split down to the line. If that is the problem you have, it will do it better and it will not charge you.
Switching over
- Settle any outstanding balances in Splitwise first — we cannot import them.
- Start your next bill here instead: scan the receipt or type it in.
- Send the claim link to the group chat rather than asking anyone to sign up.
