Split a Walmart order when there is no receipt to photograph

Every bill splitter tells you to take a picture of the receipt. An online grocery order never gives you one. What it gives you is a PDF buried in your purchase history — so that is what EachSplit reads. Upload it and the whole order comes out itemized, fees and tax included, ready for everyone to claim their own lines.

Watch it split a walmart.com PDF

The three steps below, done end to end: the PDF goes in, every line comes out itemized, two people claim their own items from one link, and the tax lands on the lines that were actually charged it — the bread zero-rated, the household goods at 8.25%.

How to do it

1

Download the receipt

Not the confirmation email — the receipt from your purchase history, after delivery. That is the one with the substitutions and the real weighed prices on it.

2

Upload the PDF

Drop the file in. Multi-page orders are read in full: every line, the tax, the delivery and service fees, and the tip.

3

Send the link

Your roommates open it in a browser, type their first name, and tap what was theirs. Shared staples can be claimed by several people at once.

Where the receipt lives

The hardest part is usually finding the file. These are the paths at the time of writing — retailers move menus around, but the receipt is always somewhere under your order history.

Where to download an itemized receipt, by retailer
RetailerWhere to find the itemized receipt
WalmartAccount → Purchase History → the order → View details → download the receipt.
InstacartAccount → Your Orders → the order → View Receipt. Receipts can also be exported from order history.
AmazonReturns & Orders → the order → Invoice, or Order Summary. Print to PDF if there is no download.
TargetAccount → Purchases → the order → View details, then print the page to PDF.

Why the confirmation email will get this wrong

Grocery delivery is the one kind of order where the amount you agreed to and the amount you paid are routinely different. Items get substituted for a pricier brand. Anything sold by weight — meat, produce, cheese — is estimated at checkout and settled at the real weight afterwards. Out-of-stock lines vanish entirely, and the tip is often adjusted after delivery.

Split the confirmation and you will be dividing a total nobody was charged. Split the receipt and the numbers reconcile — EachSplit checks its own arithmetic against the printed total and tells you if it does not match.

Fees, tax and the tip

A delivery order carries costs that are nobody's item in particular: a delivery fee, a service fee, sometimes a bag fee, and a tip. These arrive as their own lines rather than being folded into someone's total, and are shared out in proportion to what each person claimed — so the person who ordered two things does not pay half the delivery fee. Tax follows the items, and where the receipt charges different rates on different lines, each line can carry its own.

Questions, answered

How do I get an itemized receipt for a Walmart order?

Sign in at Walmart.com, open Account, then Purchase History. Find the order, choose View details, and download or print the receipt. Printing to PDF from your browser works just as well as the download button — either way you end up with a file that lists every line, the tax and the fees.

Should I use the order confirmation or the final receipt?

Always the final receipt. Grocery orders change between checkout and delivery — items get substituted, weighed items settle at a different price, and something is often out of stock. The confirmation email shows what you asked for; the receipt shows what you were actually charged.

Does this work for Instacart, Amazon and Target too?

Yes. Anything that gives you an itemized PDF or a printable order page works the same way: Instacart exports receipts from your order history, Amazon has Invoice or Order Summary on each order, and Target keeps them under Purchases. Save the page as a PDF and upload it.

What happens to delivery fees, service fees and tip?

They come through as their own lines, and you decide how they are shared rather than having them silently folded into someone's total. Most people split fees and tip proportionally, so whoever ordered more of the basket carries more of them.

Can it handle a long order with fifty lines?

Yes — multi-page PDFs are read in full. A long grocery order is exactly the case where doing it by hand stops being realistic, which is most of the reason this exists.

Do the people I am splitting with need an account?

No. You send them a link, they type their first name and tap the items that were theirs. Nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.
